52nd Annual Conference of the Study Group on the Russian Revolution
The 52nd Annual Conference of the Study Group on the Russian Revolution (SGRR) will take place from Tuesday 5th - Thursday 7th January 2027 at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. It will be hosted by UEA’s East Centre (https://www.eastcentre-uea.org/), and will be held at UEA’s historic Earlham Hall on the edge of the campus.
The Study Group on the Russian Revolution, established in 1973, aims to promote new approaches to the study of the Russian Revolution, focusing on the period between 1880 and 1932. Affiliated to the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES), the Study Group possesses an international membership and its annual conferences boast strong representation from scholars based in the UK, Europe, North America and Russia.
We invite individual papers or full panel proposals on any aspect of the history of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union from 1880-1932 and we welcome a variety of (inter) disciplinary perspectives. As 2027 will mark the centenary of the 10th anniversary of the Russian revolution, we would particularly welcome proposals which look at the political role played by commemoration of the revolution itself over the subsequent years and decades.
The conference languages are English and Russian.
While we greatly prefer in-person participation at the conference, we are prepared to host online participants, particularly those based in the former Soviet space, the USA or other areas from which travel may be difficult or inadvisable.
All those interested in presenting should send a proposal to the conference organisers Professor Matthias Neumann and Dr Francis King at the UEA East Centre: eastcentre.his@uea.ac.uk
Paper proposals should consist of a short abstract of c. 250 words, as well as the contact details and institutional affiliation of the author(s).
The call for papers will close on Friday 2 October 2026. Papers will need to be submitted in December to allow for pre-circulation amongst the group before the conference.
The in-person registration fee will be £50.00; details of how to pay will be announced online.
We are very keen to encourage and support postgraduate and postdoctoral participation in the SGRR conference. Postgraduates (and some post-PhD early career researchers without the means of institutional support) presenting papers in person at the Study Group conference are eligible to apply for a subsidy for part of their conference costs if they are unable to obtain other funding to attend. For more details, or to discuss your needs, please contact the organisers on eastcentre.his@uea.ac.uk
